Unless you've been living under a rock that past year, chances are, you've heard of Downton Abbey. Is it not the best show on television? I just can't get enough! So much so that when I saw Nina's facebook post on how to watch Downton Abbey in England this fall, I jumped on it! Y'all, I'm pleased to inform you that we are now watching season 3! Click here for the details...I promise it's not sketchy.
Anyways, last night, as we were catching up, I was so struck by Carson and his sense of duty and loyalty to the Grantham family. Carson is the butler and runs the Grantham household. He's helped raise their three daughters, keeps all of the staff in line, and takes great delight in ensuring that everything is operating as it should and the family is well cared for. He lives to serve them and he truly enjoys it.
My first thought as I admired Carson was this: wouldn't it be cool to have servants who took delight in serving and pleasing you?! I mean, who wouldn't want breakfast in bed served on a Herend tea set each morning? Who wouldn't want a white tie, catered meal each night in the dining room? And maids to dress you and do your hair each day? Talk about living!
After I got over my own little dream, I went back to Carson and his sense of duty and loyalty to the family. He has committed his professional career to serving one family. So, I asked myself, "Do I take as much delight in serving God as Carson does serving the Granthams?"
And, based on my initial vision of wanting my own servants and breakfast in bed, I'm pretty sure you've figured out that the answer is, no. But how amazing would that be?!
Not to see serving God as a chore or something we have to do because He's done so much for us, but to see it as a joy, delight, and life calling. To make it our responsibility each day to wake up ready, willing, and eager to serve our God?
He is so worthy of our utmost devotion and attention, but far too often, I place serving God way down the list on my priorities. I see it as an obligation, rather than a delight. God has done SO much for us and He is so worthy of our utmost devotion and service!
"Fear the Lord and faithfully serve him. Think of all the wonderful things he has done for you."
1 Samuel 12:24
"Keep his commandments and to cling to him and to serve him with all your heart and with all your soul."
