I don't know about you, but sometimes this whole "grown-up" thing is a lot to keep up with. I mean, taxes, bills, insurance, who has time to keep it all straight?!
In the past week, B and I were looking over our credit card statement and we noticed two things:
1. Our monthly internet jumped up $15 with no explanation.
2. A radio promotion we signed up for at $25 for six months skyrocketed to $92!
Yikes! Determined to get to the bottom of this, we called both places to complain and ask to cancel. What did they do? They would never want to lose one of their "valued customers," so the internet company moved our internet down $20/month, so now it's even cheaper than what we had been paying before. The radio people deleted the charge and put us back on another $25 promotion. That's more like it!
Ya'll, we saved $307/year simply because we were alert and made two simple phone calls to shake things up. I was so proud of our vigilant savings, but it made me wonder how often people don't notice these things, or simply decide not to do anything about it.
In today's world, it's easy to get whisked away by the hustle and bustle so that we don't have time to stay on top of things, but in all things--our jobs, our finances, our homes, our families, and our faith, we need to be alert and on guard.
It's easy to want to hide out in our own little worlds and not really have a full awareness of what's going on around us--why do you think I don't read the news? But I think we need to be mindful of what's happening around us--where and how is God moving? How can we assist Him in His work? Who is suffering and in need of prayer? Who is lonely and in need of love?
Beyond a simple $307 savings, when we take our eyes off our own little lives and pause for a moment to look outward, it gives us a chance to be a part of something bigger than ourselves.
Be on your guard; stand firm in the faith; be courageous; be strong.
1 Corinthians 16:13
Be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people.
