Scripture Memory For May!

Image via Pinterest

Happy Monday!  I hope you all had a wonderful weekend.  You may recall from last week, today, we're kicking off our mini scripture memorization series.  On the first Monday of each month, for anyone who wants to participate, we're going to share a verse that we want to commit to memory this month in the comments.  The verse can be as short or as long as you like.

I'm so excited about doing this, because lately I've been learning SO much about how important it is that we take the time to not only read God's word, but absorb it and let it infiltrate our souls, so I hope you're as excited as I am.  Over the weekend, my fabulous cousin Barbara (she's actually my aunt, but she's way too young and hip to be an aunt so I call her my cousin) sent me the following quote from Philip Yancey:

‎"Memorization [of Scripture] can be to our hunger for God what practicing a musical

instrument
is for performance. It can be the singing of the scales of the soul."

Isn't that awesome?!

So without further ado, here's my verse:

"But you are a forgiving God, gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and abounding in love. Therefore you did not desert them."
Nehemiah 9:17

A friend sent this verse to me a few months ago and I fell in love with it for so many reasons.  I love how it speaks to God's forgiveness, grace, compassion, and love and I especially loves the reassurance it provides that God will not desert us.

If you want to join, just leave a comment saying which verse you are going to memorize this month.  Email subscribers, click here to leave a comment.  It will be so fun to have everyone's verses in one place!

After we get our verses down, then comes the fun partactually memorizing it.  A few ways to do this is to be sure to keep it in the forefront of your mindwrite it on an index card, put in in your planner, tape it up on your mirror, or even on your steering wheelsomewhere you know you'll look often.  My favorite place to put verses is on the right side of my laptop.

Have a verse for the month of May?  Sound off below!  And if you're wanting to memorize something but aren't quite sure what, here are a few of my favorites:

'I would have despaired unless I had believed that
I would see the goodness of the Lord
In the land of the living'
Psalm 27:13 (related post)

“Trust in the Lord, and do good; dwell in the land, and feed on His faithfulness.”
Psalm 37:3 (related post)

"Therefore, whatever you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do everything for God's glory"
1 Corinthians 10:13 (related post)

Ready, Set, Go!

I'm going short and sweet for the first month:

I cry out to God Most High,
to God who will fulfill his purpose for me. (Psalm 57:2, NLT)

Also, Mom taught us at a very young age that the best way to memorize Scripture was to put it to song. I'm surprised you didn't mention this!

Psalm 121:1-2
I lift up my eyes to the hills.
From where does my help come?
My help comes from the LORD,
who made heaven and earth.

Acts 4:29-30:
"Now LORD, consider their threats and enable your servants to speak your word with great boldness. Stretch out your hand to heal and perform signs and wonders through the name of your holy servant Jesus."

I pick this one you shared: 'I would have despaired unless I had believed that
I would see the goodness of the Lord
In the land of the living'

I would have despaired unless I had believed that I would see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living. Wait for the Lord; be strong and let your heart take courage; Yea, wait for the Lord.

Scott and I have been working through Isaiah 55 this year. I have to put it to song- that's the only way for me to remember all of it!
We are on 55:8-9
“For my thoughts are not your thoughts,
neither are your ways my ways,”
declares the Lord.
“As the heavens are higher than the earth,
so are my ways higher than your ways
and my thoughts than your thoughts.

Consider it pure joy, my brothers whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance. Perseverance must finish its work so that you may be mature and complete not lacking anything. James 1:2-4

Mary Elizabeth and I picked the same verse! I didn't even notice hers when I posted mine. I picked mine because my sister-in-law posted it on her Facebook last week. I want to hear Meg's song, too.
