“Fix these words of mine in your hearts and minds; tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads.” Deuteronomy 11:18 (NIV)
In Deuteronomy 11, God commands the Israelites to “love the Lord your God, to walk in all his ways and to hold fast to him.” Just before verse 18, God cautions them of the temptations to turn from Him and worship other Gods. To guard against the inevitable temptations, He urges them to “fix these words of mine in your hearts.”
As much as my heart desires to love the Lord, there are times when my heart begins running after everything else. My spirit is willing, but my flesh is so weak and I find my heart chasing after the things of the world—whether it be success, acceptance, material things, appearance, or many other things, oftentimes my eyes lose sight of the Lord and just how much He loves me. Thankfully, no matter how many times my heart begins to stray, God who is so rich in mercy makes us alive with Christ and showers us with His grace. (Ephesians 2:4)
Meditating on the words of the Lord and really taking His words to heart is a great way to guard against the tendency of wandering hearts. By clinging to the words of the Lord, and understanding His commands, His promises, and His grace, we are more equipped to strengthen our hearts when they begin to stray. Psalm 119:11 declares ,“I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you.”
As we continue to love the Lord, I pray that our hearts be strengthened and filled with the mighty words of the Lord.
Heavenly Father, thank you for your incredible love for me. When I look at who you are, and I realize how much you love me, my heart is overwhelmed. Lord, I long to “love you, walk in your ways, and hold fast to you”, but sometimes it is just so hard. I pray that you will strengthen my heart with your powerful words. Father God, thank you for the power and provision that you have provided with your word. Today, I pray that I will “fix your words in my heart and mind” and that I will meditate on your words day and night. Lord, you are my God, my Savior, and my King, and with all of my heart I long to love you.
